Shop NowThese are freshly cut willow withies with a lovely green color. To preserve the branches as they are, place them in an empty vase without water. Freshly cut green willow will remain flexible and hold its green color for about six weeks. For a longer preservation of willow color, you will need to dry and then seal it. Here are some options:Boiled linseed oil: For an outdoor project like a garden ornament, a 50/50 solution of boiled linseed oil and turpentine can be brushed or sprayed on after the willow has dried.Shellac or varnish: For indoor decorative use, you can apply a clear shellac or varnish to the dried willow to protect its color and prevent it from fading further.Glycerin solution: An alternative is to preserve the branches in a solution of one part glycerin to two parts hot water. After soaking, hang the branches to dry. The glycerin will keep them supple and help lock in some of their natural color.
